Elmer's Partners with Society for Science and the Public #projectready

I was thrilled to work with Elmer's as a project leader for their Science Fair project. Since David13 had a science project he needed to work on, this was a great opportunity for us to learn more.

We discovered that Elmer's has partnered with the Society for Science and the Public to inform, educate and inspire people about the role of science in our every day lives and how important it is. The national science, technology, engineering and math competition for U.S. 6th, 7th and 8th graders, the Broadcom MASTERS™ (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) inspires and encourages the nation's young scientists, engineers and innovators.  There are competitions in almost every state for science fair projects.

This is a really great opportunity for your child to get involved in learning more about science and what role it plays in their life. I never really liked science and math when I was growing up and I think that if someone had taken the time to get me interested in some of the cool science project ideas it would have been a much more enjoyable process for me.

How to get your child involved in a science fair #projectready

Each year our school system has a science fair. The children have to pick out a science project, do the research and experiment, compile the data and then present the project to the class. It's a really great learning tool for them because it teaches them how to research, how to take logical steps to determine an outcome and how to see something through from start to finish. It also helps them learn that science can be used in so many every day situations. My son applied his most recent science project to both music and sports both of which interest him. My daughter has applied her science projects to working in the kitchen and the effects of different household properties on each other.

I really love this because it makes science fun. When I was in high school, we didn't have fun projects like this. Science was all a matter of bookwork and memorization which is probably why I never enjoyed science. Science fair projects are so much more interesting that they foster a love of learning.

Just a few ideas of things we've done in the past are:

Baking bread - discuss why/how yeast rises
Exploding volcano - made out of paper mache & use baking soda/lemon juice to explode
Germinating seeds - explain process of germination & growth & effects of sun/water
Homemade lava lamp - explain why water/oil don't mix
Grow crystals with alum

We are #ProjectReady for the Science Fair

So after a ton of work Wednesday on our snow day. I think we are about project ready for the science fair project for David13. David has always had a keen interest in music so it's not surprising that his science fair project has something to do with music.

His hypothesis was that the type of music played while running affects a runner's heartbeat. His thought was that metal/rock type music would cause an increased pulse when compared to something like country or pop/hip hop. For the experiment, David13 and three of his friends run around the gym while different music is playing. Then pulses are checked and recorded to see which song has the fastest heart beat.

Since this is a school project, we have to follow the school's rules. The school won't allow us to take pictures of the kids that ran or a video while they're running. I can understand that for privacy reasons. Here's the final poster board he did. We used an Elmer's tri-fold board as the base because it's sturdy and easy to work with. We found ours at Walmart for less than $5.

 We're all set now. He just needs to present it to the class.

Getting #ProjectReady for the Science Fair

David13 has a science fair project due for his science class this year. He's decided that different types of music affect your heartbeat differently when you run. He plans on having several of his friends run in the school gym while different types of music is playing on his CD player. Then he'll test their heart beats after each type of music to see which type makes your heart beat faster.

We're starting with a Trifold Elmer's display board. These work really well because they're sturdy and big enough to hold a lot of information. I found mine at Walmart for less than $5.00. We also have a variety of Elmer's glue products along with some colored paper to make the information he prints out stand out well.

He's waiting to be assigned a time to use the gym at school to run in so he hasn't been able to do the actual running part of his project soon. But he has started to gather up all of his supplies and graphics.
