Marty loves sweets but he's a diabetic so traditional sweets are not the best choice for him. He really doesn't like traditional artificial sweeteners because they upset his stomach. We recently had the chance to try out Ideal No Calorie Sweetener which uses xylitol.
Xylitol is a natural sweetener found in fruits and vegetables. It's suitable for diabetics and valued at a seven on the glycemic index scale. It also helps prevent tooth decay and plaque formation on the teeth which is important for me when choosing snacks for the kids.
One packet of Ideal is equal to teaspoons of sugar. A packet of Ideal has zero calories compared to 30 calories from sugar. It has only 1.5g of carbs compared to 8 carbs from sugar. That's a great choice for me on my Weight Watchers diet because there are no calories! I really prefer not to drink my calories. I'd much rather eat them and this helps me keep my calories down.
I was thrilled to find out that I can cook with Ideal sweetener too! One cup of Ideal is equal to one cup of sugar when you're baking. I decided to give Ideal sweetener the ultimate taste test and use it to make sugar cookies which is Marty's favorite snack. There was a recipe on the back of the Ideal sweetener package that I used. See the previous post for the recipe & my results. The cookies baked up just the same as traditional sugar cookies. I died them pink to be festive :) Marty loved them and couldn't tell the difference between Ideal sugar cookies and traditional sugar cookies.
Ideal No Calorie Sweetener comes in a bag form or in packets. I'm loving the packets for my coffee. They're very convenient to toss in your handbag to use when you're out. You can also try the brown sugar and confectioner's sugar varieties. You will find it in the same aisle as traditional sugar. Don't forget to request your $1.00 coupon for Ideal! You can check out their store locator to find a store near you that carries Ideal. In my area, I found it in Shaws, Hannaford and Price Chopper. You can also purchase it online at places like Amazon.
I'm looking forward to trying Ideal in more recipes. They have a really extensive recipe section on their website with recipes for tons of yummy treats like pecan pie and lemon bars. I cannot wait to try those. Lemon bars are one of my favorite treats and I'd love to be able to enjoy one without all the calories of a traditional recipe.
