Scrabble Flash from Hasbro!

Scrabble is one of my all time favorite games. I have fond memories of playing Scrabble with my Mom as a child. I used to love creating words even when my first words were of the three letter *cat* variety. Eventually, my love of the game encouraged me to use larger and longer words which encouraged my use of the dictionary which encouraged my love of reading.

Scrabble Flash CubesWhen my kids were young enough to read and make their own words, out came the Scrabble board so I could include them in my favorite game. All good things change eventually and now there's an electronic version of my favorite favorite game. The latest Hasbro toy is Scrabble Flash. The tiles know when you make a words and they change letters on every turn and keep score too!

Scrabble Flash includes 5 electronic letter tiles and a storage box. It's made for players age eight and up and can be played by one or more players.  I love that this version can be played alone!  I hated it when, as a child, I couldn't find anyone to play with.  There are times when the kids need to be entertained and I am just swamped with things to do.  This is a great game for them to play because it's fun and educational.

David13 is my official board game tester so we decided to give this a try.   Each person takes turns making a five letter word with the five electronic tiles.  You move the tiles around until you have the word made.  It beeps at you when it recognizes the word.  If you are successful, it displays NEXT and the turn passes to the next person.  If you're not successful, it displays OUT and the turn passes to the next person.  The tiles are 2"x2" and made of white and red plastic.  They are *smart* tiles which means they communicate with each others.  The word database it uses is based on the official Scrabble website.  There are 3 different game variations you can play depending on how many people you have and how difficult or easy you want the game to be. You can play with all five tiles or make it harder and use only four tiles.  All of the tiles & the directions fit perfectly in the little black plastic box.

I like the variety the game offers.  You can form a bunch of different words so for example you can form PANTS and then remove the S and make PANT.  You can make ANTS and then remove the S and make ANT.  Then you can move it around and make TAN and PAT and TAP, etc. and so forth. At the end it tells you how many points you got & how many you could have got which is really neat except when it tells you that you got 10 and could have gotten 27. Then you just feel silly.

I really like how easy this is to store. All the tiles fit neatly into the little black box and it's easy to bring along with you to a friend's house or to play at the park or wherever you have a flat surface. There's no more tiles falling all over the ground or loosing the Q.  I also appreciate that the batteries are included with the game. David likes that it can be played alone on those days when he's bored and wants something to do to entertain himself.  Definitely a great addition to the game closet!
