Family game night is something I really enjoy being involved in with the kids. It can be difficult to find games that work for everyone in the family with a 13 year old boy and 17 year old girl. Lots of games that are out there right now are really too young for them to enjoy so I'm always on the lookout for something new to play that will keep them interested.
Blue Orange Games offers a wide variety of high quality, fun games for children and adults of all ages. They are proud to use durable materials like storage tins and wooden pieces to ensure your game lasts a long time. This is important with kids because they are a lot tougher on their games than adults are - at least mine are! They're also eco-conscious and are committed to planting two trees for every tree used to create their wooden games.
Yamslam is a risk, strategy game so it's great to get your child thinking logically. It's also a great game to reinforce basic math skills as well as teach more complicated math skills like probability and odds. All the pieces and parts of the game are contained in a tin so it's great for traveling and easy to keep everything organized.
Yamslam includes one dice tray that's lined so it's quiet when you roll the dice, 5 dice, 28 chips and rules of the game. It's suitable for ages 8 and up. Each game takes about 15 minutes to play and one to four people can play at a time. The first player rolls the five dice up to three times in order to get one of eight combinations (two pairs, three of a kind, small straight, flush, full house, 4 of a kind, large straight or a Yamslam which is all dice the same). Once you make one of these combinations, you take one of the chips that matches. There are only four chips of each combination so you want to get the ones worth the most points before your partner does. If there's no chip available, you don't get the points. At the end of the game, total all your points and the most points wins.

David and I really enjoyed playing Yamslam. It's fast paced but still easy enough to play that it won't lose younger kids. The quality of the tin and the pieces is fantastic so I know this is going to last a long time. The game gets more challenging as you progress because there are a limited number of each type of chip. So once all the full house chips are gone, you need to try for a different type of combination. When there are only one or two combinations left, it takes longer to get chips. This can definitely be a really competitive game. David13 was more much interested in accumulating points than I was. He wanted to continuously count up the chips to see who had more. Great way to encourage math skills without knowing it. This is definitely a game we're going to play over and over again. Blue Orange Games has a wide variety of fun games on their site.
